If you’re looking for a fun family restaurant with decent prices, you might want to try out the Zen West Roadside Cantina near Belvedere Square on York Road. This restaurant offers both Tex-Mex and Southern specialties (Although it leans more towards Tex-Mex.) The restaurant has a colorful theme based on roadside cantinas throughout Texas and the West along Route 66.

While this restaurant offers the typical hot and spicy dishes you’d expect from Tex-Mex, Zen West also has a selection of mildly hot and less spicy items (Especially helpful for kids or those without iron stomachs.). Some of my favorites are the Enchiladas, Chicken Fried Steak, and the BBQ Pork Sandwich. My fiance, who has an iron stomach, has found many items that suit her spicy tastes. She particularly the Fajita Steak Burrito.  Most recently we tasted the mahi-mahi which were excellent.

Many of the Tex-Mex items come with the sauce of your choice. It’s hottest is the Chipotle while the others (Ancho Chile, Tomatilla, and Ranchera.) are mild flavored. However if you’re still unsure ask for a taste of the one you’re interested in.

The retro décor which includes things found along the roadside and other memorabilia associated with road trips is sure to impress kids and their families. Of course, the most prominent piece of décor is the painting by Raoul Middleman depicting a cattle. Along with a cheerful staff who are quite helpful to their customer they also have relatively short wait times (A good thing if you have small children.) as well as a having a kids menu.
