November Restaurant News

by Celeste Corsaro

The holiday season is coming into full swing and many Baltimorean's have been posing the question,"What restaurant is opened on Thanksgiving Day?"

A little research has revealed a few places in town worth mentioning which are open on Thanksgiving Day. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

As always, we're open to your input. Let us know where you went, what you had, and how you enjoyed it. Feel free to send us some of your tried and true Thanksgiving recipes so we can share them online with other party throwers and goers, throughout the holiday.

To march us forward into the season of festivities, Here are some restaurant tid bits...

The Kalis Restaurant Group has done it again! They have opened another restaurant concept in Fells Point whose opened doors have welcomed a new staff member. Nick Angelini, formerly of LaScala, has joined Group and is helping to open ADELA, a South American/Spanish themed tapas bar. ADELA is located at 814 S. Broadway, right around the corner from their sister restaurant, Meli.

ADELA- "the flavors of Spain" will feature a tapas style menu with specialty paellas. The wine list offers Spanish and South American influences and their interestingly spectacular cocktail menu is complemented with authentic Spanish sangrias.

I did the get the chance to stop in there for just a bit, this week. This is definitely my new favorite place. The food was amazing! I had the Bistec s la Parilla~ flank steak with crumbles of bleu cheese accompanied by a strawberry compote and baby arugula. Also, Camarones y Ajo~ shrimp, lightly sautéed in olive oil served with their version of mojo verde (a fresh sauce consisting of tomatillos and garlic). My visit to ADELA wouldn't be complete without a sampling of their sangria-in both red and white, they are delicious!.
A big thank you to Ken Petti (manager) for his hospitality and congratulations to The Kalis Group and Nick. What a great addition to the neighborhood and to your staff!

My good friend, Max, of Max's Empanadas, will soon be opening his new restaurant in Little Italy in the space that previously housed Il Scalino (313 S High Street). Max's Empanadas, a South American Style bistro will serve delicious Argentinean Cuisine. A gourmet carry out, coffee shop, pastry and wine shop will also feature South American products like chimichurries and house made dressings.

I am crazy happy for Max and I can't wait to see him in his new digs. They are slated to open in late December; I will keep you posted on the details of the opening.

In keeping with our Argentinean theme, here's little info about a new wine importer in town. Mike Clark of Tango Wines is an importer of some of the finest wines that Argentina has to offer. He has been hosting wine dinners throughout Baltimore at restaurants such as Ciao Bella and recently sampled his wines with Jerry Edwards of Chefs Expressions at a private wine tasting. He has just received 13 new wines this month and he is eager to have Baltimore try them. For more on his wines, click here.

Three restaurant, located on the corner of Baltimore and Linwood Aves near Patterson Park, welcomes a new chef. Anthony Marini has taken command of the kitchen with some great new changes to the menu and has added a chef's table and weekly specials. The décor will be updated a bit, as well, to compliment the new menu and themes. They are working on all of this now, so be sure to stop by during the holidays, to see what is new.

Milan, a new restaurant in little Italy plans to open in December, on the corner of Eastern and Exeter Sts. I think this place will definitely be a new hot spot in town. I had the chance to see their "dream board" with their logos and décor. Hues of reds offset the stark black and white tones which bring to life the sleek sofas and amazing lounge area. Three floors, a bar, a lounge and a dining area, will bring action to this central location, something that we needed on that end of town and in Little Italy. I will post more as I know on this new place!

In Federal Hill, located at the Harborview Marina, Sorso Café has opened, next door to Tabrizi's. Sorso Café is a small and quaint spot offering lite fare, salads, gelatos, wine and beer. During the day, it's a coffee shop befitted with ambiance and WIFI making it a perfect spot to do a little work away from the office. At night, Sorso transforms into an eatery which boasts a nice selection of wines. The outside patio area has been enclosed for the winter months-a nice and toasty heated area for customers who still enjoy the illusion of being outdoors. Brian Johnson and his partner Brett have been working diligently to plan their upcoming tastings and pairings. I anticipate that this will be the place to be in the summer, as well. With the marina right there, boaters and locals will find what they need in this new Federal Hill attraction. Be sure to check our events calendar for upcoming wine tastings and new menus selections. Congrats to the Sorso crew!

Pizzazz Tuscan Grille, located at Pier 5 hotel, has opened their heated deck for happy hours throughout the winter. Deanna Cook, owner of Pizzazz, has quite a line-up of local, guest bartenders who will be serving up great concoctions every Friday. The Friday night proceeds, benefit a designated charity each week. If you are interested in bartending, go to the website and sign up. It really is a fun place with a great view and right on the water. Check it out!

Dangerously Delicious Pies has opened another location, but this time, in Washington D.C! Congrats to Rod Henry, the rock and roll pie guy! Don't forget his current Baltimore location in Fed Hill for your holiday pie needs. I LOOOOOVE these pies. If you are hosting or going to someone else's house this Thanksgiving, bring along one of these pies and those pies certainly will be the talk of the holiday.

Check out their website for their variety of flavors, both sweet AND savory!

Need to get a jump start on your holiday wine shopping? The Wine Market will be holding their annual "Wined Up" party on Dec 1st from 6-9 pm. "Wined Up" is a wine tasting that owner Chris Spann has hosted for the past few years. It is one that I am sure to mark on my calendar as a "must attend" every year. Come sample wines from around the world and enjoy hors d' oeuvres crafted by executive chef, Jason Lear. If you like the wines, stock up! You can purchase them at a 20% discount at the December 1st event only. See website for details.

Do you have guests coming in for the holidays? Be sure to check out Blue Door on Baltimore. This is a bed and breakfast, located in Butchers Hill, on Baltimore St.

You can peruse amenities of this quaint Baltimore addition and review their menu online at Baltimore Eats...
