Eat And Drink For A Cause

Well, here we are, Baltimore, in that long stretch of the tail end of winter that sometimes seems so devoid of the kind of food, beer, and wine festivals that spring and summer will bring. However, the next few months actually have some exciting inside events that will not only tempt your palette, but also support some top charities around Baltimore. Get rid of those winter blues by chowing down, drinking up, and getting out to some of these charitable festivities!

The Second Annual Oscars Baltimore Celebration Benefiting MICA, March 2, 2014

Lord Baltimore Hotel, 7 p.m. - 11 p.m.

This celebration in the newly renovated Lord Baltimore Hotel in Downtown Baltimore promises to be a truly elegant event. Get ready to walk down the red carpet and experience the Oscars, Baltimore style!

With live entertainment and the screening of the Oscars throughout the event, partygoers get to don their best Oscar ready formal attire, all while supporting the Film and Video Program at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

For the food lovers, the “heavy fare” promises to impress. With top local restaurants like Cafe Gia, RA Sushi, Anastasia Italian Bar and Bistro, Mr. Rain’s Fun House, Clementine, and Tapas Adela at the helm, it’s a sure bet the savory food at this event is going to worthy of its own awards.

The sweets aren’t about to come in second place either, though. La Cakerie and Sweet Indulgence Mini Dessert bar will be on the ready to help you celebrate your favorite nominees taking home the Oscar with some sugary concoctions.

Drink lovers, fear not. Your ticket cost includes an open bar so you can pair beverages with your bites, or just raise a toast (or several!) to your favorite actors and actresses.

Cirque du Casey Cares, March 22, 2014

B&O Railroad Museum, 6 p.m. - 11 p.m.

This carnival themed event is the 14th annual fundraising gala for Casey Cares Foundation. Described as “providing ongoing, uplifting programs with a special touch to critically ill children and their families,” Casey Cares is an established charity in Baltimore. The organization has several programs to help children who are dealing with ongoing illnesses (cystic fibrosis, blood disorders, brain tumors, leukemia, lymphoma, childhood cancers and more) and the families of those children. From birthday parties and events to bring ill children and families together to “celebration vacations” and providing pajamas and themed pj parties, Casey Cares works to build a higher quality of life for children who are struggling with critical illnesses, and their families.

From festive decorations to live jazz, two bands, auctions, raffles, and an open bar, Cirque du Casey Cares is sure to be an event to remember. However, the top notch dinner and themed appetizers and drinks should be memorable as well! Jamie Snyder, Special Events Program Director for Casey Cares, was willing to give a sneak peek of a few of the details.

Catering, Jamie shared, will be provided by Atlantic Catering and will feature a cocktail hour with standing, as well as passed, hors d’oeuvres (think classics like cheese and fruit with Baltimore favorites like creamy crab dip), while the seated dinner will feature another Baltimore mainstay, filet mignon and crab cake.

The high end hors d’oeuvres and entree are the foundation, but the fun twist is the themed portion of the menu. “To tie in the vintage circus theme, we’re planning to have popcorn and cotton candy for guests to enjoy,” Jamie stated. In addition, the signature drink, still being finalized, will incorporate cotton candy in some way. Now that’s the circus, all grown up!

Guests are encouraged to wear “elegant dress or cocktail attire,” but only if they are not coming dressed up! Enjoy the circus experience even more by dressing up as any of their suggestions: Lion Tamer, Fortune Teller, Tightrope Walker, and more!

Maryland Drafts And Laughs, April 4, 2014

Maryland National Guard Armory in Annapolis, 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.

After months of cold weather, snow, and being fairly homebound, what’s the best cure? Laughter, naturally! And it seems that Maryland Drafts and Laughs is offering it in spades.

At their April 4th event, comedians and breweries are pairing up for an event that not only offers some laughter, but some education about beer, as well, with private presentations and question and answer sessions.

With five comedians to entertain and some brew masters to educate, what else do you need? Well, beer of course! Breweries like Flying Dog, Heavy Seas, and Leinenkugels’s will be well-represented with a wide range of styles. Ticket prices are tiered, but most include beer samples, one on one meetings with the comics, and parking.

To soak up all that hoppy goodness, food from award winning Stan and Joes’ Saloon will be available for purchase, in addition to wine for your friends who want to join you for the laughs but maybe not the brews!

What could make this event even better? A portion of ticket sales are dedicated to supporting The Foundation for Community Betterment. This philanthropic organization is dedicated to helping those in need in a variety of ways, from providing support to those victims of catastrophe to helping someone in need to buy a wheelchair that insurance won’t cover. Recipients of the program’s charity are varied. To learn more about the organization, visit their website:
