Back to School Bites

Ann Marie Brokmeier

Welcome to Baltimore, new college students! Still not sure of the best restaurants near your college? Let me help you.

Towson University (Towson, MD)

Bread and Circuses – This adorable bistro is located in an old 1920’s haunt. You won’t be disappointed by their incredible American-style menu. Sit in their gorgeously-decorated dining room, or on their lovely rooftop deck for brunch, lunch, or dinner.

S&J Crab Ranch – If you haven’t had real Maryland crab yet, be sure to grab one on your first trip to S&J. They serve crab cakes, crab soup, crab salad, and you can crack your own crabs there too! For those less crabby than others, they have a large menu featuring American bar food.

University of Baltimore/MICA (Midtown, Baltimore, MD)

Brewer’s Art – A great place to stop by after class to grab a few local beers & an amazing bite to eat. My favorites? The baked mac & cheese, the garlic fries, and the Brussels sprouts (probably the only place to ever make me eat my Brussels sprouts!).

On the Hill Café – I’ve raved about this place before, but I will again; On the Hill has an amazing menu and is decently priced for poor college students. They have great vegetarian options, and their meat is certified no hormones, no antibiotics.

UMBC (Catonsville, MD)

Pho #1 – What college food list would be complete without the mention of pho? This place is particularly great & you can get carry-out, which is an amazing amount of broth, meat & other goodies. They also offer completely vegetarian pho (with veggie broth)! Extra points for that.

Indian Delight Restaurant – I’ve heard great things about this place from UMBC students. They have a huge menu, so there is definitely something for everyone here. They also host a reasonably-priced lunch buffet from Monday through Saturday, and all of their entrees come with bottomless rice.

University of Maryland Med Ctr/University of Maryland at Baltimore (Downtown, Baltimore, MD)

The Corner & Bistro Wine Bar – This row house-turned-wine bar is a great stop for any new students in Baltimore. With an amazing menu (for example, their “turduckin” sandwich with savory garlic truffle fries), and a great wine selection (not to mention their half-off wine on Saturdays), you’ll be stopping back more than once.

Alewife – This is an amazing restaurant focused around their great, rotating beer menu. They’re well-known for their Smoke Burger, but try to get a variety of things on their menu because everything is great.

Morgan State (Montebello/Loch Raven, Baltimore, MD)

Hamilton Tavern – Hamilton Tavern is adorable & delicious. Their menu hosts a wide variety of foods (Thai cold noodle salad, eggplant parm, duck leg confit). Their website says, “We reserve the right to make something yummy at any time,” and luckily they do that often.

Clementine –Griddled Challah French Toast. Need I say more? While Clementine serves all three meals, I would recommend them particularly for brunch. They are also farm-to-table, so they are sure to celebrate Maryland’s seasons through the food that they proudly serve.

For those that are well-seasoned in the Baltimore area, what did I forget? Where are your favorite places to send new college students?
