Downtown Dining Out: Something New for Lunch

Carrie Murphy

Eating out for lunch every day can get boring (so can brownbagging it, for that matter). If you work in downtown Baltimore, I'm sure you and your coworkers have some tried-and-true places where you like to go for a midday meal. But why not try a few of these delicious but less obvious suggestions? They just may make you actually look forward to going to work.

Rather than burgers and fries, how about Turkish food? Cazbar, on Charles Street, has a three course lunch special for $11.99 (including pumpkin or lentil soup!) as well as regular, affordable lunch entrees like shish kebabs and sandwiches. They also have a convenient online ordering system, so you can have the food delivered to your office or pick it up.

17 Light, named after its address, shows Baltimore pride with bold orange decor and lots of crabmeat options on the menu. 17 Light has plenty of great options for lunch, including burgers, wraps, salads and even steak. We particularly love their tater tots, which are perfect for sharing. Try the "Bawlmer Bay" tots, which come loaded with a huge amount of crab dip. Just make sure you get some caffeine so you don't go into a post-lunch food coma! Have to keep the productivity up, after all.

Nalley Fresh is a new healthy restaurant in the downtown area. It's rapidly become popular with the office lunch crowd, and for good reason: Nalley Fresh offers a veritable smorgasboard of salad options, including different types of lettuce, toppings and dressings. The atmosphere can be confusing at first, but the staff can see you through (you have to be quick on your feet as the line moves like lightning!). Salads aren't the only offering, either: you can also opt for a rice bowl or a burrito wrap with your choice of protein. We recommend the grilled salmon, even if it is a bit more expensive.

We really love Cypriana, a great Mediterranean place in the Sun Trust building. The food (from Cyprus, of course) is simple, filling, and delicious. The portions are generous, too, generous enough that you can pack some extra hummus away into the office fridge to perk you up during that inevitable 3 p.m. slump. The staff at Cypriana is very accommodating and is happy to modify menu items if you're on a special diet or have any kind of allergies.

Alewife and Miss Shirley's are two other downtown spots where you can't go wrong at lunch. Have any other recommendations for awesome daytime eateries?
