Your Official Summer Taco Guide

Carrie Murphy

Bienvenido to your official taco guide, Baltimore. If Mexican is my favorite type of cuisine, tacos are definitely my favorite food. There's basically no time in my  life when I don't want to eat tacos. Morning, noon, night. Crunchy, soft, or in-between. I love tacos, and I love to eat them here in Charm City.

My favorite Mexican place in Baltimore is Arcos on upper Broadway in Fells Point. The chicken tacos there are awesome, but ask if the kitchen will drizzle them in the mole enchilada sauce...it's the best Mexican I've tasted east of the Mississippi, no joke. I also adore the food at Tortilleria Sinaloa. The tacos are juicy, the tortillas are fresh, and the atmosphere is pretty authentic, down to the Ranchera music blaring as patrons crunch on chips. I've heard good things about El Taquito Mexicano and Carolina's Tex Mex, too.

Taco Fiesta on Exeter St in Harbor East is amazing. Great value with huge portions, plus a great salsa bar with about 10 to 15 varieties; I'm a sucker for different kinds of pico de gallo! Townhouse Kitchen is a new spot in Harbor East that serves small plates, including tacos with freshly made toppings. We had the pork carnita tacos, which were tiny (you get four) but really good.

And let's not forget Holy Frijoles. Long one of my favorite Baltimore Mexican joints, the Hampden favorite hangout of hipsters seems to have gone down in quality in recent years, although I did dig the chicken tacos I had there recently. The drunken (drenched with enchilada sauce) grilled veggie burrito is arguably the heartiest meal an herbivore can find anywhere. Banditos in Federal Hill is brand new, with lots of different kinds of tequila. The menu has fusion offerings like Ancho Coffee Bison Quesadillas, but I hear the nachos are really where it’s at.

When you aren't in the mood for Mexican but your friends are, Nacho Mamas has super stellar ribs, loaded potatoes, and salads. The duck fajitas are stellar, but I don't think their tacos are much to write home about. Although you might feel differently if you start the meal with a signature hubcap margarita!

What are your favorite taco places in the city? We'd love to add them to our list!
