Best of Baltimore: Farmer's Markets

Carrie Murphy

Here at Baltimore Eats, we're all about bringing you, the people of Baltimore, the best in local food. And increasingly, local food means local farmers. We love supporting the hardworking men and women who produce food in our region! So this week, we thought it would be fun to round-up some of the best farmer's markets in the Baltimore area. Grab your reusable tote, your water bottle, and your sun hat so you can spend some time picking out fresh food grown right here, in and around Charm City. Strawberry season is in full swing right now, so maybe you'll find some sweet berries for a pie or a crumble.

Everyone loves the farmer's market under the Jones Falls Expressway, which I just learned is officially called the Baltimore Farmer's Market and Bazaar.  It runs on Sundays from April to December, 7 am to noon. The vendors here are from almost every county in the state, and there's even a few from Pennsylvania and Virginia, too. Two vendors, A & R Seafood and Sander's Crabs, operate from right here within the city limits, selling B-more's best seafood. There are also lots of food and craft vendors at the market, including Blacksauce Kitchen, Dangerously Delicious Pies, and Zeke's Coffee.

The market in Waverly, also known as the 32nd St Farmer's Market, is particularly close to my heart. I have great memories of heading here on Saturday mornings with my mom when I was a child. And I'm not the only person from whom this market holds special memories: did you know the 32nd Street Farmer's Market hosted a wedding in 2007? That's right, a couple chose to say their vows here, among the vegetable vendors! The market still runs on Saturdays from 7 am to noon. Vendors for 2012 include Atwater's, South Mountain Creamery, and lots of produce sellers like the Otterbein-area's Big City Greens. Visit at the intersection of E. 32nd and Barclay Streets.

On Key Highway, the Baltimore Museum of Industry has a market on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, May to October. This smaller market is in its fourth year.

Down in Highlandtown, there's a farmer's market every Thursday from 4 to 8 pm in the 400 block of Conkling Street; the ever-popular Blacksauce Kitchen's delectable biscuits also make an appearance there. As part of the Fells Point Main Street initiative, there's a great little market on Saturdays starting at 7:30 am in the square at Broadway and Thames streets.

The annual farmer's market in Towson will be open Thursdays from 10:45 am to 3 pm starting on June 14th. What's your favorite Baltimore-area farmer's market? We'd love to hear about other smaller markets that we might not have heard of, so please let us know!

Great reference! There is also a farmer's market opening in canton, by DuBurn's Arena on Saturday mornings. I believe their times are pretty decent for those who enjoy sleeping in too!
