First Date Plates

Your stomach is a little queasy and your hands are sweating up a storm. No, these aren't the symptoms of food poisoning: just the pre-first date jitters! Knowing how important is it to choose just the right eatery for a first date, we've rounded up a few of our favorites. You don't want something too romantic, but not too casual, either. You want an atmosphere where you can chat easily (read: not too loud), but that's not super private. Not too pricey, but nothing budget either. Here are our picks:

We think Golden West Cafe in Hampden is a pretty perfect first-date spot. With their locally-raised meat and fresh green chile flown in from Albuquerque, NM, this quirky restaurant with the vaguely Western theme is just the thing. Once you're finished eating (try the Aztec burrito!), you can hang out for a few more hours at the bar, which is open until 1:00 a.m.

Blue Moon Cafe is generally thought of as more of a brunch place, but did you know it's open 24 hours on weekends? If you'd like to try "breakfast for dinner," people, there's no better bet than this Fells Point joint. With everything from specialty pancakes and omelets to chorizo and French toast, this tiny but charming eatery provides enough options. Look for the blue awning; you can't miss it!

If you and your date are looking to get a little untraditional (ask him or her first, just to be sure! Not everyone is an adventurous eater), we highly recommend The Helmand, Baltimore's own Afghan restaurant. The food is fresh, spicy, and always delicious. Another ethnic option? Thai Landing, a quiet Thai eatery in Mount Vernon. It has a relaxed atmosphere and is reasonably priced. We recommend the tasty scallop curry.

Oysters are supposedly an aphrodisiac, so if that's the way you'd like your night to end up, you might want to consider a trip to Ryleigh's. The oyster bar's menu changes weekly, but they routinely have terrific seafood entrees and an extensive alcohol selection.

What are your suggestions for a first date spot? We'd love to know where you fell in love! Or at least, got the fire going.
