Fiore Winery's 2007 Sangiovese was named Maryland's premier wine at the 21st Annual Maryland Governor's Cup Competition.  "Every year we try to find a single wine that represents the best winemaking in the state, and Mike Fiore's 2007 Sangiovese was a clear winner," stated Al Spoler, competition director and host of WYPR's Cellar Notes. Spoler was excited by the rapidly maturing abilities of Maryland wine makers to produce superior red wines. The 2010 "Best of Class" Winners: Best Red: Sangiovese 2007 from Fiore Winery;

Best Rose: Rose Reserve from Knob Hall Winery; Best Red Blend: Basilisk 2008 from Serpent Ridge Vineyard; Best Off-Dry: St. Michael's White 2009 and Best Fruit: Apple-luscious from Fiore Winery. "This was an incredible competition of Maryland wines," said Kevin Atticks, Executive Director of the Maryland Wineries Association.  "So many wines showed so well that the judges were truly put to the test." "Growing Sangiovese in Maryland has been quite a challenge and much different than growing it in Italy," stated Fiore, who is originally from Italy, "But after 12 years of working with it we have finally reached international quality."

The Annual Maryland Governor's Cup Competition is the premier competition of Maryland wines, evaluated by three select teams of judges from the retail, wholesale, restaurant and press segments of the wine industry. Currently, there are 42 licensed wineries in Maryland. These wineries-along with independent commercial vineyards-grow over 700 acres of grapes. Maryland wineries sold about 1.4 million bottles of wine in 2009, and their wines are available at over 900 retailers and 300 restaurants.
